Article 012: The Copper Rich History of Basque Country

Long before written histories described the Basque people, the mountains, valleys, and Atlantic coastline of the region now known as Euskal Herria were home to communities experiencing one of the great technological transformations of prehistoric Europe. For thousands of years, stone had been the primary material used to manufacture many tools. During the Chalcolithic, or Copper Age, metal began appearing alongside these older technologies. In the Basque region, this period is generally placed in the third millennium and early second millennium BCE, meaning that people living in this landscape were using copper more than four thousand years ago.

Copper did not suddenly replace stone. The two technologies existed alongside one another for generations. Stone remained abundant, familiar, and extremely useful, while copper offered people an entirely different material to work with. Copper could be hammered and shaped, while developing metallurgical techniques eventually allowed people to extract metal from ores and cast it into new forms. Archaeological finds from the broader Bay of Biscay region during the Chalcolithic and Early Bronze Age include flat axes, copper alloy daggers, awls, Palmela arrow points, beads, and spiral bracelets.

The introduction of metal was part of a much larger transformation taking place in prehistoric Euskal Herria. Communities increasingly depended upon agriculture and livestock while older hunting and gathering practices continued. Shepherds moved animals through mountainous landscapes, people cultivated valleys, and communities occupied caves and open air settlements. Megalithic burial traditions were also widespread, particularly the construction and use of dolmens. The appearance of copper therefore occurred within societies that were already changing how they produced food, occupied the landscape, buried their dead, and interacted with neighboring populations.

The geography of Euskal Herria makes this history especially interesting. The region lies between the Iberian Peninsula, the western Pyrenees, southwestern France, and the Bay of Biscay. Mountains could certainly act as barriers, but passes through those mountains also created natural corridors. Rivers connected inland areas, while the Atlantic coast provided another potential route for movement. The prehistoric communities occupying this region were therefore positioned between several different parts of western Europe.

Modern archaeology has begun revealing just how extensive some of those connections were. A major peer reviewed study published in the European Journal of Archaeology examined 1,273 archaeological metal finds comprising 4,554 metal artifacts from regions surrounding the Bay of Biscay. The objects covered approximately 2900 to 1100 BCE, spanning the Chalcolithic and much of the Bronze Age.

This study is particularly relevant to Basque history because the researchers' Cantabrian study region included modern Gipuzkoa, Bizkaia, Álava, northern Navarre, Cantabria, and Asturias. In other words, a substantial portion of Euskal Herria lies directly within the region being examined. Researchers identified patterns showing that metal objects from distant parts of the Bay of Biscay were sometimes deposited and used in similar ways, providing evidence for changing forms of interregional connectivity.

Those connections were not constant. During parts of the Chalcolithic and Early Bronze Age, similar categories of metal objects and related practices appeared across widely separated areas. During the Middle Bronze Age, northern Iberia and western France became more archaeologically distinct. Researchers suggest that the two sides of the Bay of Biscay may have become less connected through the particular metalworking networks represented in the archaeological record. By the Late Bronze Age, wider Atlantic connections became important again.

This changing pattern is important because prehistoric trade should not be imagined as one permanent highway operating continuously for thousands of years. Networks could grow, weaken, disappear, and later reappear. Sources of raw materials changed. Technologies changed. Communities changed. The importance of particular routes could change with them.

Copper resources elsewhere in northern Iberia also formed part of this larger prehistoric metallurgical landscape. Important prehistoric copper mining sites such as El Aramo and El Milagro in Asturias demonstrate significant exploitation of copper ores in northern Iberia. Research into Bay of Biscay metalwork has suggested that changes in the exploitation of these resources may have influenced changing patterns of metal circulation.

This provides a fascinating glimpse into prehistoric Europe. Copper was not simply a material that every community discovered and used independently. Mining ore, processing it, transforming it into usable metal, manufacturing objects, and circulating those objects created opportunities for communities to exchange materials and knowledge. Metal objects could move away from the landscapes where their raw materials originated, while manufacturing techniques and ideas could spread between communities.

The Bay of Biscay study provides an especially interesting example. During the Chalcolithic and Early Bronze Age, copper alloy daggers, awls, Palmela arrow points, decorative objects, and flat axes appear across parts of this enormous region. Many were discovered in burials or hoards. Researchers found enough similarities in the archaeological patterns to identify connections between communities separated by considerable distances.

This does not mean that a single people controlled the Bay of Biscay or that one organized trading empire existed. Prehistoric exchange could operate through many smaller connections. An object or technological idea could pass from one community to another and then continue onward. Over generations, such exchanges could connect populations that may never have considered themselves part of the same society.

During the later Copper Age, the communities of northern Iberia also existed within the much larger European world associated with what archaeologists call the Bell Beaker phenomenon. Distinctive Bell Beaker pottery and associated objects appeared across enormous portions of Europe during the third millennium BCE. Archaeologists do not interpret this simply as evidence of one empire or one uniform people. Instead, Bell Beaker archaeology reflects complex networks involving objects, practices, technology, and population movement.

Metallurgy was part of that changing world. At Bauma del Serrat del Pont in Girona, northeastern Iberia, archaeologists identified Bell Beaker pottery that had been reused in copper working. This site is not in the Basque Country, and it should not be presented as Basque evidence. Its importance is broader. It demonstrates how copper metallurgy and Bell Beaker practices could intersect within prehistoric Iberia during the same general era in which metallurgy was developing in Euskal Herria.

Eventually copper became the foundation of another major technological transformation. Ancient metalworkers learned that copper could be combined with other metals, particularly tin, to create bronze. Bronze could offer greater hardness and durability for many applications and became important for tools, weapons, ornaments, and prestige objects.

The need for different raw materials also encouraged connections between regions. Significant copper deposits and significant tin deposits were not necessarily located in the same places. The Bronze Age therefore developed within a world in which access to minerals, knowledge, and exchange networks could be extremely valuable.

The position of Euskal Herria along the Bay of Biscay placed its prehistoric communities within this wider Atlantic environment. The archaeological evidence supports interaction and connectivity around the Bay of Biscay, but it does not demonstrate that prehistoric Basques controlled a European copper trade or operated a copper empire. Those claims would go beyond the evidence currently available.

There is another important distinction. We should be careful about simply calling every person living in Euskal Herria four or five thousand years ago a Basque. Archaeology can tell us where prehistoric communities lived, what tools they possessed, how they buried their dead, and sometimes where the materials used in their objects originated. Archaeology cannot automatically tell us what language every one of those communities spoke or exactly how they understood their identity.

For that reason, the most accurate description is often "the prehistoric inhabitants of Euskal Herria" or "communities living in the region that later became the Basque Country." The relationship between these ancient populations and later historically documented Basque populations is an important subject of archaeological, linguistic, and genetic research, but it should not be treated as if every detail is already known.

What the evidence does establish is fascinating enough. Thousands of years ago, communities living in this region were participating in Europe's transition into the Metal Ages. They used copper objects, practiced agriculture and livestock herding, maintained megalithic burial traditions, and existed within a wider world in which metal objects and technologies circulated around northern Iberia and the Bay of Biscay.

The story did not end with copper or bronze. Metallurgy would remain extremely important in the Basque region. Iron eventually became particularly significant, supported by the mineral resources, forests, rivers, and geography of Euskal Herria. The development of ironworking became another major chapter in the region's long relationship with metals.

One dramatic later example survives at Arditurri near Oiartzun in Gipuzkoa. Archaeological investigation has revealed extensive Roman mining activity there. Roman miners constructed galleries and shafts and exploited argentiferous galena, an ore containing lead from which silver could be obtained. Archaeologists have also discovered mining tools, ceramics, and other evidence of substantial Roman operations.

The Roman mining history of Arditurri should not be confused with direct evidence of prehistoric Basque copper mining. The Roman operation is much later and was especially associated with silver bearing lead ores. Its importance to this story is that it demonstrates how the mineral resources of the Basque landscape continued attracting intensive mining activity long after the Copper and Bronze Ages.

Scientific research elsewhere in the Bidasoa area likewise documents the importance of Roman mining in the Basque Country. Archaeological surveys have identified numerous galleries excavated using Roman techniques as well as a subterranean aqueduct, picks, hammers, and ceramics. Mining was important enough that researchers have connected it with the development of the Roman settlement of Oiasso in the coastal region.

Seen from this broader perspective, copper represents an early chapter in a much longer metallurgical history. The prehistoric inhabitants of Euskal Herria were not simply isolated populations hidden behind the Pyrenees. They occupied territory positioned between Iberia, continental Europe, the western Pyrenees, and the Atlantic world.

There is still much we do not know. We cannot identify every prehistoric trader. We cannot reconstruct every route followed by a copper axe or dagger. We cannot determine the language spoken by every community whose artifacts have been excavated. Even when similar metal objects appear hundreds of miles apart, archaeologists must determine whether this resulted from movement of the objects themselves, movement of craftspeople, exchange of technological knowledge, or some combination of these processes.

That uncertainty is part of what makes the subject so fascinating. Modern archaeological techniques are continually improving. Chemical analysis, lead isotope analysis, radiocarbon dating, archaeological excavation, and large scale comparisons of artifacts are giving researchers increasingly sophisticated ways of reconstructing ancient networks.

The mountains and valleys of Euskal Herria therefore preserve pieces of a story that began long before written Basque history. Individual names have disappeared, but evidence of these communities survives in their settlements, burial monuments, tools, ornaments, and metal objects.

Long before modern borders divided Spain and France and long before Roman armies entered the western Pyrenees, people living in this region were already participating in the technological changes that transformed prehistoric Europe. Stone continued to be used, copper appeared alongside it, bronze followed, and eventually iron became increasingly important.

The evidence does not reveal a forgotten Basque copper empire, and there is currently no justification for claiming that the Basques controlled Europe's prehistoric copper trade. What archaeology reveals is more grounded and, in many ways, more interesting. The prehistoric region that became Euskal Herria belonged to a connected northern Iberian and Bay of Biscay world thousands of years ago.

The copper axes, daggers, awls, arrow points, ornaments, and other metal objects left behind are therefore more than ancient artifacts. They provide glimpses into a period when communities around the Bay of Biscay were experimenting with new materials, exchanging ideas, developing new technologies, and creating connections across landscapes that would eventually become home to some of Europe's oldest surviving cultural traditions.
